Finding the artist

As a group our first job was to find an artist. There are many ways we could this. We could look at websites. An advantage of this would be that we could find a good artist from the wider public. I have looked at the website: http://www.unsigned.com/ and found a lot of great artists. They had a list of unsigned artists. The genre we were looking for at the time was R&B or Hip Hop. Unfortunately I don’t have family or friends who are music artists. I found some artists but some lived outside London so it would be impossible. Ariba who is the Cinematographer in the group found an artist who fit what we needed.
His name is Crucial and he goes to Stanmore College. He’s already established and people are familiar with his music. The genre of the music he makes is Hip Hop. I listened to the music he makes; they are all available on Facebook, which is a social networking site where you can upload pictures and video. I did a lot of research into him and found out that he makes underground (non mainstream) Hip Hop music. He has many views on Facebook and a lot of positive feedback. Here’s a link to one of his songs on Facebook.
He collaborated with Arjun Shah (Phantom), who is also an artist.
Crucial’s music is very intense. In his lyrics he talks about the understatement of Hip Hop genre. And about how people mistake it to be about money, clothes and cars and ignore the deeper meaning of Hip Hop. I could compare my artist to other mainstream Hip Hop artist such as Low Key. Low Key is also an underground Hip Hop artist who makes very powerful and meaningful songs.
The song I’m most interested in doing is “Straight Up Hip Hop”. This songs talks about the world issues, reality and life as it is, and other Hip Hop artists who misrepresent the genre. In my video I’m going to try to challenge mainstream Hip Hop music. I will try to make a Hip Hop video that doesn’t include sexy women, money and fashion. This will prove to be hard because most Hip Hop videos features at least one if not all of the above.
