Hip Hop music has become very popular among teenagers. Some people find it hard to define the Hip Hop genre because there is a fine line between Hip Hop and Rap. Many R&B singers move on and do some Hip Hop for example Chris Brown. Hip Hop has grown to be popular over the years. Personally I’m more familiar with Hip Hop and Rap and a lot of underground music. But R&B is the most popular genre because it’s conventional. Our group wanted an R&B or Hip Hop artists because that’s what teenagers are really into. I looked at what Hip Hop genre really is and how it’s portrayed. This article is about the popularity of the Hip Hop genre.
This is one of the trickier questions we’ve tried to answer. It seems every time we’re about to arrive at an easy explanation someone throws in a different opinion. Some maintain that rap is a kind of music, whereas hip-hop is a lifestyle — one that includes rap, break dancing, DJing, and graffiti art. Rap pioneer and sage KRS-One says simply, “Rap is something you do, but hip-hop is something you live.”
Others, however, insist that hip-hop is a musical style distinct from rap, for very specific reasons: mainly hip-hop has a particular beat and uses scratching and “breaks” (samples). They claim rapping over a soul or heavy metal track could never be hip-hop. In other words, these folks say all hip-hop is rap, but not all rap is hip-hop.
Hip Hop music has probably become so popular because it used to be the "new rap". As more Hip Hop and rap artists evolved, more songs with a good beat, good tune, etc. grew and as these "good" songs appealed to more people, more people were interested. And soon, it had become almost a race. Rappers were then treated as kings (ex: Flavor Flave) and Hip Hop artists were just the same thing. Hip hop is a mix of R&B and Rap, its basically “light rap”, and with the same subjects, more people became attracted to the way it tells stories and its sexual themes without the hardcore Rap. Hip Hop became famous because melody found it.
Hip Hop music also features in charts such as TopUk40. Main music channels like Hit40UK is mainly dominated by R&B music. The mainstream music and artists that everybody knows and has heard of, but now there is also some Hip Hop on the charts such as Eminem because Hip Hop is also becoming mainstream. I looked at the Hit40UK website and R&B artists took up to 85% of the charts. The other 15% represents some Hip Hop artists who managed to get into the charts.
My artist’s main audience are teenagers: thirteen to twenty year olds. If we look at the demographic of Hip Hop I think that people of all sexual orientation listen to it. There are also many gay Hip Hop and Rap artists. The link below has a list of gay Hip Hop and Rap artists.
I think ethnic groups listen to Hip Hop, but the there are now many races that listen to Hip Hop Music. Hip Hop used to be popular among men and not much women listened to it but now it’s popular among women too as it became more mainstream it got a wider range of audience which changed the demographic. “While hip hop music now appeals to a broader demographic, media critics argue that socially and politically conscious hip hop has been largely disregarded by mainstream America.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop
Hip hop is a form of musical expression and artistic culture that originated in African-American communities during the late 1970s in New York City. DJ Afrika Bambaataa outlined the four pillars of Hip-hop culture: MCing, DJing, breaking and graffiti writing.Other elements include beatboxing. Young black Americans coming out of the civil rights movement have used hip hop culture in the 1980s and 1990s to show the limitations of the movement. Hip hop gave young African Americans a voice to let their issues be heard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop
Hip Hop is a very intense genre. It looks at issues and topics such as religion, oppression, and politics. Hopefully in my video I’m going to do my best to portray the realism the genre reflects.
