When people think of Hip Hop they have something specific in mind. The look represents the genre. Some Hip Hop artists promote the same thing; promiscuity, money, fame and women. Famous Hip Hop artist Ludacris is an example. He makes a mixture of mainstream and underground music. His mainstream and most popular songs have similar messages which is promiscuity, money and fame. But his non mainstream music is much more serious and he looks at issues such as politics. In his album “Release Therapy”. He has two sides on this album. The Release side and the Therapy side on one CD. On the Release side he has his more serious side where he is letting out his anger and frustration. On the Therapy side he has his feel good songs. Despite his songs Ludacris isn’t a mainstream Hip Hop artist. He also makes a lot of non mainstream songs that many people do not listen to because they aren’t in the charts.
Many Hip Hop artists tap into the mainstream and non mainstream aspects of the genre. Example artists like Lil Wayne and Eminem. They idealize the Hip Hop lifestyle through their music videos. The audience are more familiar with this aspect of Hip Hop, which is on TV but the more non mainstream music isn’t on TV.
This picture is an example, Drake and Rick Ross below, we can see the Aston Martin they are driving, the woman and signs that he’s rich from the Rolex he’s wearing.
Hip Hop now has a new lifestyle and attitude. And we now see many teenagers who imitate that lifestyle. An “I don’t care” attitude which stands out is also very common. Teenagers always dress up in the latest clothes, when it is seen by artists, the style is imitated. Jay Z has a clothes line called Rocawear which is very popular.
